She smiled faintly. “Alive.”
I pictured three little girls running down the hallway.
“Good,” I said.
My mother hesitated, then said, “Your grandmother would be proud of you.”
I stared at my coffee.
“She wanted you to protect the house,” my mother added quickly, as if bracing for my reaction.
“I did,” I replied. “I protected what mattered.”
My mother nodded slowly.
“And Heather?” she asked carefully.
I looked out at the street, the neighbors’ kids riding bikes, the sound of ordinary life.
“I hope she finds out who she is without a mansion,” I said.
My mother’s eyes glistened. “And if she doesn’t?”
I exhaled.
“Then at least Oliver will,” I said.
Because that was the thing Heather never understood.
The manor wasn’t power.
It was just a place.
A building.
A stage.
What mattered was who you became inside it.
Years from now, Oliver might not remember the taste of the roast chicken or what his mother wore that night.
But he would remember the moment he rang that bell and watched his aunt walk away.
